Queer Straight Alliance

Volunteer Nanaimo’s QSA (Queer Straight Alliance) or Safe space group is a great location for LGBTQ+ youth and Allies to get together in a safe non-judgmental environment. In our group we talk about relevant facts and issues pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community. We also spend time just hanging out to get to know one another within the group. This group was formed as a way to combat the issue of isolation within the LGBTQ+ community. Within the LGBTQ+ community there is a degree of Isolation and stigma that most people experience and that reality can be very harmful to the wellbeing of a person. It’s hard enough to find friends and people to be around but for an LGBTQ+ person to find friends that are actually a part of their community is so important yet difficult to do. LGBTQ+ youth are even more vulnerable to the effects of isolation since there are very few spots for LGBTQ+ youth to gather. Most LGBTQ+ geared gathering spots are specifically for adults. So by having our Safe Space group we are bridging the gap and creating a Safe Space for a vulnerable population.
