Volunteer Nanaimo’s Queer Straight Alliance (QSA), also known as a Safe Space Group, is a place where LGBTQ+ youth and allies can get together in a welcoming, respectful, non-judgmental environment. The focus of this group is providing an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ youth and allies to connect and learn about relevant facts and issues while feeling free to be their authentic selves while enjoying snacks and games.
Volunteer Nanaimo created this group to acknowledge the need for youth-oriented QSA spaces in Nanaimo. Studies have shown that those who experience stigma and isolation are at higher risk for issues like depression, anxiety, and other health issues. This group hopes to provide the opportunity to be a gathering place for those seeking community, like-minded individuals, and a safe space.
